Introduction
EAT@Pitt hosted one of its most exciting events on November 16, 2022. We welcomed Pittsburgh food bloggers Alex Goodstein (@AlexEatsTooMuch) and Abby O’Connell (@FoodIsMySavior_Pgh) to campus for a food blogging and photography workshop!
Guest Speakers
Alex has been blogging for over 5 years. His family background includes butcher shop’s and luncheonettes and he has “extensive experience in eating.” When not trying new food, he works in the tech industry. Abby has been blogging for over 6 years. She began her adventure while on vacation in Atlantic City and says it has helped her grow, meet new people, and try new things. When not working on her blog and Instagram, she works for a marketing agency.
Both Alex and Abby shared their experience and advice. One of the biggest pieces of advice was to stay true to yourself. Don’t hold back! If you want to start a blog to make you happy, just do it.

Food Blogging & Photography Tips
Alex and Abby gave us tips and tricks about tasting food and blogging your experience. Before you eat, note the presentation, atmosphere, and ingredients. And of course, take lots of photos! When you eat, note the texture and flavor of the food so you can be descriptive in your post. After you are done enjoying your food, write your post, edit your photos, and post it to your blog. They highly recommend keeping a post schedule to keep your audience engaged. We were able to put this advice to use with sweet treats from the Oakmont Bakery! We ordered an array of cookies, croissants, donuts (Abby’s favorite!), and cupcakes. The freshly baked pastries were delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to taste, describe, and photograph these desserts.
When it comes to taking photos of the food, Alex taught us the “rule of thirds.” This rule breaks an image into horizontal and vertical thirds. First, Alex recommends turning the grid setting on your camera. Then, according to this rule, positioning the key elements of your photos on those grid lines will help you end up with better composition. Remember, lighting and angles are important. For editing photos and videos, they recommend Adobe Lightroom, Google Snapseed, CapCut, and InShot.
Despite technical difficulties during the workshop, we still had a lovely evening with these local celebrities. Thank you so much again to Alex and Abby for spending your time with us!
