Introduction
Ramen Bar is a family-owned establishment located in Squirrel Hill. We had a wonderful time sampling authentic Japanese ramen, the perfect comfort food!
The Owner
Mike Wu opened Ramen Bar back in 2012, in hopes of sharing authentic Asian food with Pittsburgh’s community. His family moved to Pittsburgh around 30 years ago, but he also spent time as a U.S. Marine in California, among other places. Growing up, Wu was introduced to cooking and entrepreneurial ventures early on, as his family established two other restaurants (Sushi House and New Dumpling) in Pittsburgh. Over the years, he opened two other restaurants: Rose Tea Cafe and Sun Penang. He hopes to expand his business further and continue to engage with Pittsburgh’s diverse community!
The Restaurant
Ramen Bar is a cozy, welcoming establishment that has connected Pittsburgh locals for over 10 years. As we entered the restaurant, our attention was immediately drawn towards the walls, which were decorated with expansive images of Japan’s bustling cityscape. The menu offered dozens of options and could be customized down to our preferred spice level, broth flavor, and ingredients. In fact, we learned that their broths are simmered for more than 8 hours, which allows the flavors to marinate and seamlessly connect the various components of each ramen dish.
The Food
Korrina - I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Ramen Bar! I ordered the vegetable ramen with a soy sauce base and hard boiled egg as an add-on. The broth was delicious and possessed a great depth of flavor. Other EAT@Pitt members tried the miso and spicy miso bases and similarly enjoyed the flavor palate. The flavors of the broth perfectly complemented the tender noodles and wide variety of vegetables in the dish. Afterwards, some of our club members shared mango mochi and absolutely loved it! Overall, we had a wonderful time at Ramen Bar and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Japanese comfort food.
